Is Senior Home Companions insured?

Absolutely. For our client’s protection and peace of mind, our caregivers are bonded & covered by workers’ compensation insurance. We also carry general and professional liability insurance coverage to make sure that our families and clients have piece of mind. This expensive, but important coverage, is a huge reason why hiring caregivers without going through a reputable company such as Senior Home Companions is such a bad idea. All the liability of having a household employee falls onto the hiring individual (and possibly their homeowners insurance). While an individual might save a small amount of money up front, in the end it could cost them a small fortune if an accident or injury happens in their home.

How do you select and screen your caregivers?

All of our ‘caregivers’ are now called ‘Home Care Aides’. Additional training at SHC is provided by R.N.’s and/or L.V.N.’s. Most of our staff are also Certified Nurse Aides, certified by the State of California. All caregivers have thorough background checks by the Department of Justice, and receive ongoing education classes and in-service’s to ensure the best care for our clients.

Are your caregivers employees of Senior Home Companions or independent contractors?

Our nurses & caregivers are employees, not independent contractors (1099 workers). Senior Home Companions pays all required state, federal taxes as well as employer Social Security taxes & payroll taxes. All financial & legal issues related to gainful employment are addressed, leaving the client free from worry about this issue. See #3 for why its important for the caregivers to be employees. Many small ‘Home Care’ ( and some large franchises we have found out) companies have their “employees” as 1099 workers and pass the risks off onto the consumer– “Caveat emptor’ or buyer beware.
